August 20, 2020

Cristiano Ronaldo needs no introduction. His remarkable achievements within the game have seen him rise to become one of the most famous people in the world. Over a playing career spanning 18 years, Ronaldo has won 5 Ballon d’Or awards and etched his name into the football history. In commemoration of his most recent Ballon d’Or award, Nike, Ronaldo’s boot sponsor, released a special pair of boots: the Nike Mercurial Superfly V CR7 ‘Quinto Triunfo’.

In 2017, Ronaldo won La Liga, the UEFA Super Cup, the Supercopa de España, the Club World Cup and, most importantly, the Champions League, scoring an incredible 53 goals along the way. Like always, Lionel Messi had an equally fantastic season but the capture of the Champions League, in particular, makes it difficult to begrudge Ronaldo’s 2017 Ballon d’Or win.

What Makes Ronaldo’s ‘Quinto Triunfo’ Boots So Unique?

Obviously, the most significant aspect of the boots is their tribute to Ronaldo’s achievement. Every detail, from the design of the boot to the name, is a celebration of the milestone. ‘Quinto Triunfo’ is Portuguese for ‘fifth triumph’, referencing the astounding 5th Ballon d’Or victory of Ronaldo’s career.

From a design perspective, these boots stand out for a number of reasons. The theme of the boot is obvious, with its generous use of gold. From the top of the boot, There is a crisp fade from the pure platinum Nike Dynamic Fit collar (sockline) to a metallic gold upper and soleplate, creating a premium look. The predominantly gold colouring is something of a tradition for Ballon d’Or boots – a prestigious colour for a prestigious award.

The boots are covered with detailing in tribute to Ronaldo and his achievements. On the heel of the boot, Ronaldo’s signature CR7 logo can be seen, known worldwide as his personal brand and his range of Nike football boots. ‘Quinto Triunfo’ is written down the back heel of the boot and also featured in the soles, alongside ‘CR2017’, integrating the victory with his personal brand. Along with the more obvious references, there are some details that are well hidden. For example, all of the years in which Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or (2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017) are hidden within the tick, becoming visible at certain angles.

Each pair is given a unique number out of a thousand which can be found printed at the bottom of the back of the boot. This number makes each pair truly unique and highly desirable to any collector.
