What a year 2018 was for the little midfield maestro as Luka Modric, the Croatian captain and Real Madrid Midfielder swept up the accolades, winning his first Ballon d’Or and being awarded by Nike with his very own signature “Golden Touch” Mercurial Vapor XII, a boot of which only a total of 1,500 pairs were available worldwide.
A MERCURIAL HISTORY
The 33-year-old has been kicking it with the Nike boots since his early days at GNK Dinamo Zagreb, when he first started with the Nike Air Zoom 90 II in 2003 before switching to the Nike Mercurial Vapor family in 2007.
Following his move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2008, he continued with the speedy family, wearing the Nike Mercurial Vapor III and eventually switching to the newly released Vapor Superflys in 2010.
The magician has kept firm ties with the Mercurial family, continuing to sport the Vapor boot from 2012, when he moved to Real Madrid. He has worn every iteration of the boot from the Nike Mercurial Vapor VIII to the Nike Mecurial Vapor XI.
THE YEAR OF MODRIC
2018 was a pivotal year, as Modric swept up on all fronts, claiming almost every individual trophy available.
He won his third successive Champions League trophy in May and subsequently the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award later that year.
Modric also had a splendid World Cup experience where he helped Croatia to a first World Cup final, was named the world’s top male player at the Best FIFA Football Award and received the Golden Ball award for the best player at the World Cup.
If that wasn’t enough, he also won the FIFA club world cup with Real Madrid.
On December 3rd, Luka Modric emerged as the winner of the highly-coveted Ballon D’or award ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo who finished 2nd and Antoine Griezmann who finished 3rd.
THE GOLDEN TOUCH
A testament to Modric as a player, one who joined the elite group of players to have their own signature boot, he actually received not one, but two personal boots in 2018.
The first, the Mercurial Vapor PE “Modric, was released in September to commemorate his 2018 Best Player distinction and was not available to the public. There was some initial confusion about the design of the boot, with Nike releasing one version of the boot and the player wearing another. Regardless, it was a boot worthy of its owner.

The Actual Nike Version of the Mercurial PE ‘Modric’
Just three short months later, Nike released the Golden Touch Mercurial 360, a boot to commemorate the world’s Ballon d’Or best player of 2018.
The boot took its inspiration from the precious metals used to make the Ballon d’Or Trophy. It features a gold and black upper with the black Nike swoosh-tick outlined in gold along with a gold soleplate, a Mercurial logo embossed on the badge on the heel, and most importantly, a fingerprint which signifies Mercurial DNA and it is spread all over the boot in a metallic shinny platinum color.
Following the Ballon d’Or win, Luka Modric even took to his Instagram page to appreciate Nike with the caption: ‘A special year. A special prize. Thank you everyone @nikefootball.
What a year, and what a boot. What do we think of Modric’s boot?
