L’Architetto (The Architect) Andrea Pirlo was known for his elegance, his fine touch, his deadly freekicks and for his excellent distribution of play. He was the heart of the early 2000s A.C. Milan, the italian national team, Juventus, and finally New York City FC in the MLS.
Andrea Pirlo started his career with Brescia’s youth squad and was later signed by Internazionale Milano where he struggled to be part of the starting 11 and was loaned out twice. It was during his second loan, back at Brescia, that he readjusted his position to a deep midfield role and flourished while playing alongside the legendary Italian striker Roberto Baggio “Il Divin Codino” (The Divine Ponytail). His new position worked wonders for Pirlo, who joined AC Milan in 2001 and led the team to winning two Serie A Scudettos, two European Supercup Titles, the Fifa Club World Cup and two Uefa Champions Leagues (2003, 2007).
Pirlo then went on to join Juventus in 2011 where he won the Serie A 4 consecutive times: 2011-2015, as well as an Italian Cup and two Italian Supercups.
With the Italian National Team he won the FIFA World Cup in 2006, the UEFA European U-21 Championship, and an Olympic Bronze Medal.
Besides football, Andrea Pirlo’s other passion is winemaking. He spent his childhood in Flero harvesting grapes at local vineyards. In 2007 he opened his very own winery in Brescia: Pratum Coller. In 2016, to celebrate his dual careers as a Footballer and Winemaker, Nike released a limited edition boot: Tiempo Pirlo. The Tiempo range is Nike’s “Touch” boot, known for their comfort. Other players who have worn this boot are Paolo Maldini, Romario, Ronaldinho, Sergio Ramos, Carlos Tevez, Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, and Francesco Totti.
The Tiempo Pirlo’s feature merlot colored premium leather inspired by the wine. On the heel there are four stars, similar to the Pratum Coller’s logo and in honor of Italy’s four world cup titles. The Italian flag also appears on the lace aglet. As a nod to winemaking and the Tiempo history, Aged Since ‘94 is writen in metallic gold on a genuine cork sockliner. The shoes came originally packaged similar to a bottle of wine and included a performance sockliner.
On May 21st, 2018, a testimonial match “La Notte del Maestro” (The Maestro’s Night) was played at the San Siro Stadium in Milan to honour Pirlo’s retirement from professional football.
