With the 2018 Ballon d'Or coming close, we have a list of players who have been seen as favorites to win the award. Today we take a look at the reasons why these players may deserve the prestigious award.

The Ballon d'Or award has been around for quite some time, and the 3rd of December will mark the 63rd annual award ceremony takes place. The first player to carry the Ballon d'Or was Stanley Matthews, a winger for Blackpool F.C who was first giving the award in 1956.

Since then, we have seen a host of great players enter their names enter into the record as the best player in the world, including the likes of Johan Cruyff (3x), Micheal Platini (3x), Marco van Basten (3x) and other notable players who won it such as Ronaldo Nazario de Lima, Ronaldinho, Kaka, and Luis Figo.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the only two players currently to have won the award a record five times each. Cristiano Ronaldo picked up his first Ballon d'Or at Manchester United in 2008 with Lionel Messi then winning it 4 consecutive times from 2009 to 2012. The award went to Ronaldo again (who was by now at Real Madrd) in 2013 and 2014, followed by Messi in 2015,  and then again the Portuguese Captain in 2016 and 2017. But, with both of the superstars tipped to miss out on the top 3 next week, the big question now is who will be their likely successor.
